Summer Reading List 2022

Message about academics at Holy Family Academy:

Holy Family Academy aims to produce students who can grasp truth with their minds, express it intelligently, and defend it persuasively in speech and in writing. To establish a set of tools for knowing truth, we introduce formal Philosophy and Theology in seventh grade, far earlier than most Catholic schools. Our students also receive a broad grounding in the great works of the Western literary tradition, studying poetry, plays, novels, and essays by authors such as Homer, Sophocles, Dante, Racine, Cervantes, Molière, Goethe, Shakespeare, Dostoevsky, and Tolstoy. The Upper School classes perform a play every year, which ensures that students not only read classic authors but learn the drama from the inside. Our upper schoolers come to possess great literature the way they possess the multiplication tables. Every high school student also writes, delivers, and defends a thesis each year in front of the faculty and his classmates, and participates in yearly debates, during which he learns to prepare complex arguments and adapt them to counterattacks.

Holy Family offers a rigorous curriculum in History from Greco-Roman times to modernity, giving students a rational understanding of past events and of God’s historical relationship to man. All students take at least three years of Latin, and Spanish is offered to high schoolers. In the sciences, we offer Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, including laboratory work, as well as half-year courses in Astronomy and Music Theory to round out the liberal arts.

Most importantly, all Holy Family students attend Mass and pray together daily, which gives each day a truly Catholic character. By the time they graduate, our students have absorbed what it means to put Christ at the center of each day in a practical sense.
